How Acupuncture Can Improve Men’s Health During Movember

Gentlemen, put down your razors”

Movember is an annual event during the month of November in which men across the country grow moustaches to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide/mental health. It is known globally that on average, men die six years earlier than women and for health reasons that can often be prevented.

Acupuncture can be an effective treatment in helping relieve the symptoms that comes with both prostate and testicular cancer as well as stimulating your emotional well-being by bringing harmony to your body and mind.

The aim of acupuncture is to restore that balance and bring the body back to equilibrium. Physical, mental, and emotional aspects of a person are interdependent, and a typical treatment will take the whole person into consideration. This means that two people with the same diagnosis received from their GP are likely to receive different acupuncture treatments.

Prostate Cancer

When it comes to cancer, though acupuncture cannot cure it, it can play a huge part in relieving some of the symptoms. According to The Forge Clinic, it was found in a clinical trial of 100 patients that acupuncture improved their “conditions significantly for patients with moderate or severe benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition in which the prostate becomes enlarged.” The results concluded that acupuncture improves the quality of the patient’s life and is therefore an effective treatment.

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is 1 of the less common cancers and tends to mostly affect men between 15 and 49 years of age. It is a highly curable form of cancer with a 95% success rate in cases.

It can impact male fertility as it both the treatment and cancer can affect the quality of sperm. It is proven that acupuncture treatments can reduce the number of structural abnormalities found in sperm and can improve sperm motility, morphology, and count.

Acupuncture can also be a great support for men undergoing treatment for testicular cancer. Some side effects from cancer treatment, such as nausea, vomiting, pain, and fatigue can be eased by regular acupuncture visits, as well as modifications to diet and lifestyle.

Mental Health

More often than not, we forget to take care of ourselves and our wellbeing. Mental health, especially in men, is hugely important, and should be discussed more often, disregarding the stigma surrounding it.

An analogy that I frequently use is that each week you wash and refuel your car and every so often you will service, tax and MOT it too. If we don’t refuel our cars, we don’t get very far.

The same goes for us and our bodies too!

Acupuncture is used an effective form of treatment for stress, anxiety and depression and is highly individualised. It restores balance, stimulates emotional wellbeing, and brings harmony to your mind by removing any blockages and restoring energy flow.

To conclude

I understand that for men to reach out for help can be difficult due to social constructs, fear of being seen as “less” masculine and the stigma that comes with asking for help. However, I encourage you to reach out if you are struggling.
